The Courage of a Lion. Parnonas Artist Residency, Peloponesse.

The importance of courage for artists is to recognise their challenges in creating and sharing their work. Artistic expression requires vulnerability and openness, as artists often share personal experiences and emotions with the world. This can be a complex and intimidating process, as it involves exposing oneself to criticism and rejection.

Furthermore, the artist must be courageous to take risks and push the boundaries of what is possible. This can involve exploring new forms of expression or challenging societal norms and expectations. Through this willingness to take risks, art evolves and grows, and new forms of expression are discovered.

In addition to these internal challenges, artists must also navigate the external pressures of a capitalist society that often reduces art to a commodity. This can lead to a focus on profit and commercial success rather than valuing the artistic process and the emotional and intellectual labour that goes into creating a work of art. It takes courage for artists to resist these pressures and create meaningful and valuable work rather than solely focusing on its monetary value.

Moreover, artists must also have the courage to address uncomfortable truths and societal issues. This can involve exploring one's own biases and limitations and expressing opinions that may be unpopular or controversial. However, through this process, art has the power to make a real impact on the world, challenging our assumptions and inspiring us to think critically about the world around us.

Despite these challenges, the artists continue to create and push the boundaries of what is possible. Through this courage, art can connect us, foster empathy and understanding, and inspire us to imagine a better world. Ultimately, through the artist's resilience, they can create original, impactful, and inspiring work, challenging us to imagine a better world for all.
